The 2.0 mg dose is typically reserved for patients who: Have not achieved adequate blood sugar control at lower doses Require additional weight management support Can tolerate the medication without severe side effects Need further weight reduction beyond what lower doses provide While Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction, many healthcare providers prescribe it off-label for weight management in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with weight-related health conditions
