In 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to reduce cigarette litter, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is partnering with the PA Turnpike Commission to implement the Cigarette Litter Prevention and Recycling Program (CLPR) by placing cigarette receptacles at up to 17 services plazas and interchange access buildings across the state
For respondents perceptions of individual packs, both non-smokers agreed that Pack 1, 2, 5, and 6 were appealing to them, that the pack design encourages them to try smoking or buy the pack, that they would like to try smoking the cigarettes in the pack, that they would like to be seen with the pack, that smoking the cigarettes in the pack is harmful to their health, that the health warning labels on the front of the packs are noticeable, that the health warning labels stand out or catch their attention, that the packs make them stop and think about the harmful effects of smoking, and that the health warning labels are easy to understand
Cigarette butts are the most abundant litter on the planet and contaminate soils, waters and nature in general
The research covers established tobacco brands, essential accessories such as rolling papers, and emerging consumer preferences driven by cost-efficiency and artisanal appeal
Further research should evaluate its efficacy for specific diseases and its additive benefits with pharmacological or herbal medicine
